Dorcus “Didi” Lekganyane’s partner, was arrested after his release from hospital.

He was taken to Bramley police cells immediately after his discharge.

The 48-year-old man, whose name cannot be revealed until his court appearance, faces murder charges after Didi was found dead in their backyard apartment in Bramley, Johannesburg.

Sources say the couple lived in a double-storey apartment at the man’s family home, along with a nanny caring for their three-year-old daughter.

“At the time of the incident, the couple was in their bedroom upstairs while the nanny and the baby were downstairs,” said a family member.

The couple had recently moved in after starting to build their own home.

Didi was found with her throat cut and multiple stab wounds.

“It was a very traumatic scene. He made sure that she was dead. She died a very painful death,” said the family member.

The suspect, who works for the City of Johannesburg, is set to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Sources said the motive behind the killing was the man’s suspicion that Didi was cheating. They had a history of domestic violence, most of which was not reported.

In a statement, Didi’s family said anyone experiencing domestic violence should seek help.

“Any death of a woman in South Africa at the hands of an intimate partner is one death too many,” they said.

Dorcus, a 32-year-old academic and respected scientist, was found with multiple stab wounds after police responded to a domestic violence call last Thursday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed the murder charge.

“Police are investigating a murder docket after responding to a domestic violence incident in Bramley on Thursday. A 32-year-old woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds. Her partner was also found in the house,” said Colonel Kweza.
