The collapse happened on Monday afternoon when a concrete slab on the second-floor deck gave way, trapping workers beneath it. Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other rescue teams have been at the site since Monday.
Earlier, Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed the toll had reached eight.
“Two individuals have been located and teams are currently working to extract them from beneath the concrete slab. One person remains unaccounted for, bringing the total death toll to eight,” Khumalo said.
