Nurses working at the Mathew Goniwe clinic in Cape Town not only had their badges robbed, they now have to watch the cheeky criminals flaunt them around Khayelitsha.
The criminals broke into the clinic last Thursday, stealing computers and other equipment, and robbed the security personnel at gunpoint. The thugs also vandalised the building.
As well as traumatising the staff and making their working lives hell, the criminals have now been spotted wearing the nurses’ epaulettes – a kind of shoulder badge – out and about!
Resident Thamsanqa Mdleleni said he knew the criminals had been busy robbing the locals but he didn’t know they had taken the badges from the clinic itself.
“I believe the nurses had left the epaulettes and the criminals took advantage of the opportunity to just steal everything in their path,” said Thamsanqa.
“Wearing the stolen epaulettes shows a lack of respect. We need to protect the clinics and other places by reporting suspicious behaviour and not support criminal activities by buying stolen property.”
The City of Cape Town Health Department confirmed that the criminals entered the grounds of the Mathew Goniwe clinic.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, spokesperson for the Western Cape SAPS, said: “Harare police are investigating a business robbery at a medical facility in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.”
According to reports, four armed suspects held up the security guards, seizing cell phones and electronic equipment before fleeing the scene.
