Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced plans to spend between R200-million and R400-million on stadium upgrades for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
The event will be hosted by South Africa together with Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Johannesburg, Centurion, Durban, Gqeberha, Paarl, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and East London will all be afforded opportunities to host games at the showpiece event.
CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki told the Sunday Times that all eight venues would be closely reviewed in the coming weeks and thanked the ICC for the opportunity to host a Cricket World Cup for the first time in over two decades.
“I would like to thank the ICC and its committees for awarding us the honour to be the host of the greatest game in the world,” he said.
“This means a great deal for the sport of cricket in South Africa and indeed the legacy project. We are looking forward to the many nuggets that will arise from our hosting of this great gentlemen’s game.
“The exercise [of selecting venues] was a scientific one and also included the number of hotel rooms and the availability of an airport.”
Some of the grounds may need more aid than others, Moseki added
The top eight teams in the ODI rankings will attain direct qualification for the competition while the remaining four spots will be determined through qualifiers.
The Proteas and Zimbabwe have already qualified while Namibia will have to go through African qualifiers.
