Covid reaches the Cabinet

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe is the first member of the Cabinet to test positive for Covid-19.

Mantashe will be working from home after he and his wife Nolwandle Mantashe tested positive on Tuesday.

Many other government officials have tested positive. The mayor of Newcastle in KZN, Ntuthuko Mahlaba, is one of the latest.

Three premiers have the virus – Gauteng’s David Makhura, Western Cape’s Alan Wilde, and North West Premier Job Mokgoro, who has been released from hospital to quarantine at home after no longer showing symptoms.

SA currently has one of the highest rates of infection in the world, but still a relatively low mortality rate. Gauteng has been worst hit, with more than a third of SA’s 300,000 cases. The above chart is from the health ministry.
