- A 22-year-old suspect charged with murdering boxing champion Zolani Tete and attempting to murder a woman is expected in court on Monday.
It is another packed Monday in South Africa’s courts and commissions, with major criminal cases and inquiries back in the spotlight.
Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala returns to the Madlanga Commission, Jub Jub is due in court over an alleged firearm incident and the long delayed Steve Biko inquest is set to seek answers about his death.
Meanwhile, a suspect arrested after the killing of former boxing world champion Zolani Tete is expected to make his first court appearance.
Pretoria: Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected back in the hot seat at the Madlanga Commission on Monday.
Matlala is expected to address information left out of an earlier affidavit, including details involving several senior police officials.
The names include suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, former KwaZulu Natal Hawks head Leseja Senona and former Organised Crime head Richard Shibiri.
The commission is also expected to question Matlala further about his alleged links to the criminal underworld.
During his previous appearance, Matlala refused to answer questions about the R228-million Medicare24 tender.
He repeatedly relied on his right against self incrimination.
Germiston: Musician and television personality Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, is expected back in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.
He faces charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing an object likely to make someone believe it was a firearm.
The charges follow an incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale on 14 June.
Police allege Jub Jub accused the driver of being romantically involved with his girlfriend after the driver dropped her off at an Edenvale home.
The situation is said to have escalated when Jub Jub allegedly forced the driver into his vehicle and stopped him from leaving.
He is also accused of firing a gun in the driver’s direction.
The driver escaped unharmed and went to a police station.
After his arrest, Jub Jub approached the Johannesburg High Court over delays in his first court appearance and asked for bail.
The court ordered his release on R5,000 bail on 16 June.
In 2012, Jub Jub was convicted over a crash which killed four schoolchildren.
In 2024, separate charges of rape, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were withdrawn.
Mdantsane: A 22-year-old man arrested following the killing of former two-division boxing world champion Zolani Tete is expected in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Tete, 38, was shot dead outside his Mdantsane home on Friday.
A 27-year-old woman who was with him was wounded and remains in hospital.
Eastern Cape police have made three more arrests, bringing the number of people in custody to four. Another person who was questioned has been released.
The arrests were made in Mdantsane and KuGompo City over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana said the 22-year-old suspect arrested on 22 August has been charged with murder and attempted murder.
The attempted murder charge relates to the wounded woman.
Police said the other three suspects are expected to appear in court soon and more arrests could follow.
Gqeberha: Almost five decades after Steve Bantu Biko died in police custody, a new inquest is expected to examine what happened to the anti-apartheid activist.
The long delayed inquest in the High Court in Gqeberha will revisit the circumstances surrounding Biko’s death in September 1977.
Biko died after being tortured while in police custody.
Members of the apartheid era Security Branch are said to have been involved in his death.
The inquest had been expected to start last year but was postponed after two people of interest asked for more time.
The proceedings will seek answers to questions that have remained unresolved for nearly 50 years.
Durban: Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and 21 co-accused are expected back in the Durban High Court as their multimillion rand corruption trial continues.
They face charges including fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering linked to R320-million in Durban waste contracts.
The accused include former and current African National Congress councillors and eThekwini municipality employees.
The state claims municipal officials deliberately allowed a waste collection tender to expire in 2016 without starting the process of finding new suppliers.
This allegedly created an emergency which allowed suppliers to be appointed without the normal tender process.
The state claims Gumede directed officials to make sure contracts went to companies owned by people linked to the African National Congress.
A trial within a trial is expected to continue.
The court must decide whether information seized from former eThekwini city manager Sipho Nzuza can be used as evidence.
