- The court has dropped a R5-million corruption case against former Jozini mayor and MKP leader Ndodephethe Mthethwa, who says the charges were politically motivated.
- Mthethwa insists his political rivals in the ANC used the corruption case to destroy his reputation after he left the party.
The Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has withdrawn corruption charges against uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) regional leader and former Jozini Local Municipality mayor, Ndodephethe Bethuel Mthethwa. He believes the charges were politically motivated.
Police accused Mthethwa and his co-accused of diverting R5-million meant for a municipal youth development programme. Instead of being used for the “Joy” youth project, the money allegedly ended up in a construction company’s account before being distributed among those involved, including Mthethwa.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, Mthethwa said his political opponents had tried to tarnish his reputation.
“I feel vindicated that the corruption charges were withdrawn by the court. This is a clear sign that it was all about the conspiracy to destroy my name for something I never done,” he said.
He also claimed that after he left the ANC, where he was a leader in the uMkhanyakude region, the party’s former secretary pushed the corruption allegations against him to damage his reputation.
“This shows that the corruption case was well-orchestrated,” he added.
