A mother, 31, and her boyfriend, 26, were arrested on Thursday evening for allegedly murdering their four-year-old son.

North West provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda Funani said the couple allegedly killed the toddler last year and buried him in a shallow grave in the veld on the outskirts of Boitekong Extension 4, in North West.

She said residents had become suspicious when they no longer saw the child.

“According to information, the child was last seen by neighbours in July 2023,” Funani said.

“They started asking questions, but the mother would make up stories. This week, members of the community decided to involve their councillor, and they approached the mother who allegedly confessed.

“She allegedly disclosed that she and her boyfriend killed the child and buried him in a shallow grave in the bushes.”

Funani said the councillor and members of the community handed over the mother and her boyfriend to the police, and they were charged with murder.

They are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 8 July.

Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, the North West provincial police commissioner, congratulated the community for not taking the law into their own hands but working together with the police to arrest the suspects.
