ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that an inclusive government made up of different parties in parliament will form the future government of South Africa.

He has not closed the door on any parties and told a press conference after the national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Boksburg that the ANC had already had initial talks with parties, including the EFF and DA.

The GNU may also include the IFP, the NFP, the PA and the MK party, which has agreed to meet a delegation from the ANC.

“We will invite political parties to form a Government of National Unity as the best option to move our country forward,” Ramaphosa said.

“The modalities of the GNU will take into account the conditions prevailing at this moment in our country’s history.”

Ramaphosa said the GNU’s purpose will be to tackle job creation, economic growth, the high cost of living, service delivery, crime, and corruption.

He said the moment calls for multiparty collaboration if the country is to confront the severe challenges it faces.

The ANC has been forced to form a coalition government after its share of the national vote fell from 57% in the 2019 elections to 40% this year.

Ramaphosa said the 87-member NEC considered all available scenarios to help it find a solution that will unite the nation.

“The ANC bears the responsibility of ensuring unity, stability, peace and progress in South Africa.”

Ramaphosa said the country is at a “moment of fundamental consequence” and must move quickly to safeguard national unity.
