A suspect who robbed a woman of her cellphone was chased down by mphakathi in Berea, Johannesburg.
He was caught by a crowd and beaten with stones, sjamboks and bricks.
Residents tried to necklace him, but police arrived in time to save his life, and he was rushed by ambulance to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Police officials on the scene, who are not allowed to speak to the media, nevertheless told Scrolla.Africa that the suspect was accused of stealing a cellphone and ran into one of the hijacked buildings in Berea, which are known as mnyamandawo – buildings without electricity or water.
A resident who was in the crowd said the area is notorious for gangs of robbers.
“We are not safe. It doesn’t matter what time of the day, but criminals will pounce on you if you walk alone,” he said.
The police subsequently raided a mnyamandawo building in Berea, where they arrested two more suspects who were suspected of committing similar crimes in the area.
