Cops offer reward for info on Gugulethu murder

Western Cape police are offering a reward of R50,000 for information that will lead to the arrest of suspects responsible for the murder of the Gugulethu Community Policing Forum deputy chairperson, Lulama “Guffy” Dinginto.

SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Lungile Anthony Madolo, 35, also known as Fire, has been identified as a person of interest. The detectives would like to question him in connection with the incident.

Madolo is a known criminal in the area.

Dinginto was shot five times in the head by unknown suspects in the early hours of Sunday morning after they had broken the burglar bars and kicked down the door.

Her lifeless body was found in the bathroom, and the family believes that she ran to hide.

Dinginto has been described as a brave but humble person who loved her community.

Nyanga Community Policing Forum secretary Dumsani Qwabe said they have lost someone who was dedicated to her work and someone who was working for the community.

“Her wish was to see Gugulethu a better and safer place. Sadly, she was killed – allegedly by someone who has many cases [against him]. Our wish is for the suspects to be arrested and sentenced for taking Dinginto’s life,” said Qwabe.

Qwabe said they won’t stop fighting crime in their community just because one of them has been murdered.

“We will continue fighting crime in our communities. We can’t back down now,” said Qwabe.

A resident in Gugulethu fears that the killing of the CPF member will cause panic, and many of the patrollers are going to quit.

“I heard one of the patrol members saying Dinginto’s murder is a message to anyone fighting crime in Gugulethu to think carefully. Criminals are sending a message that they will deal with anyone fighting crime because they are being disturbed in their criminal activities,” said the resident.
