Two KwaZulu-Natal police officers have been arrested after allegedly robbing three women — including a pregnant woman, a bride-to-be, and an IT university student.
The 24-year-old IT student reported the crime to the Reaction Unit South Africa, a private security company.
One of the victims said the women were picked up by men in full police uniform, driving an unmarked car in Verulam CBD on Thursday.
The officers told them they were suspects in a robbery and were being taken to be identified.
On the way, the women were robbed of their handbags, cash, phones, and a weave worth R2,500. They were dumped in Temple Valley.
The bride-to-be lost R13,000 in cash and a phone. The pregnant woman lost her iPhone 16 and other valuables. Luckily, none of the women were hurt.
In Gauteng, two police officers have been arrested for allegedly being part of the Blue Light gang that’s been hijacking cars and trucks on the N3 highway. In total, four suspects have been arrested — two of them police officers.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects were linked to two hijackings that happened in Kempton Park.
Investigators followed up on information and called the officers in for interviews.
“Information from the interview led the police to two more civilian suspects who were found in possession of three firearms and signal-jamming devices. All four suspects including the police officers were arrested,” said Nevhuhulwi.
Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said the arrest should send a strong message to those few rotten potatoes within the service that the arm of the law is too long and we will surely catch up with them,” said Mthombeni.
In Johannesburg, a station commander has also been arrested for serious crimes.
Colonel Logan Govender from Norwood Police Station was charged with theft, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice. He’s accused of helping criminals steal goods worth R165,000 from a shop.
Nevhuhulwi confirmed his arrest and said an internal disciplinary case has been opened.
