  • Police arrested four men, for officer Nkululeko Mbambo’s murder in Leondale
  • Officers recovered several hijacked vehicles and unlicensed guns, including Mbambo’s service pistol.

Four men have been arrested in connection to the brutal murder of a Johannesburg Metro police officer in Lawley, south of Joburg on Wednesday.

Nkululeko Mbambo, 46, was killed on 14 April. This week, four men – including his younger brother – were arrested for his murder.

Police say a joint team tracked the suspects down to two homes in Leondale on Wednesday.

At the first house, they arrested two men and found a stash of illegal guns. One of the pistols, a Vector, was hidden in a fridge. Police also found a Toyota Rumion, which had been used during the killing.

The team then moved to a second house and arrested the man they believe pulled the trigger. CCTV footage helped identify him. He was found with a pistol believed to be the murder weapon. A hijacked Toyota Urban Cruiser was also discovered at the house.

Superintendent Xolani Fihla said that after questioning, the suspects revealed that Mbambo’s service firearm had been taken during the attack and handed to the suspect’s younger brother, who was in the Lawley Station Informal Settlement.

Officers continued the search on Thursday and arrested the brother. They recovered the missing gun, with its serial number filed off, and found a hijacked Volkswagen Polo Vivo on the property.

All four suspects are in custody and will appear in court soon.
