Cops arrest suspected gogo killer in Eswatini

A man suspected of killing a 73-year-old woman in Jozini has been caught in Eswatini to face charges for a number of other crimes.

The suspect, who allegedly confessed to the killing of Thobi Ngwenya on the phone to her children, was nabbed in Eswatini for illegal entry and housebreaking, according to government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo.

The suspect appeared in court on Monday, but details about his arrest and the charges he is facing are still unclear.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that if a suspect is arrested in another country, the authorities contact their South African counterparts through the appropriate channels to arrange their extradition.

The suspect has been on the run since Ngwenya’s murder on 10 March.

Her body was found after her children called her cellphone to ask where she was when she didn’t come home from the fields. They found her after a search.

The suspect is also accused of raping young schoolgirls from the area.

Community members had been concerned about the suspect’s continued evasion of the police.

Jozini resident No Ndlazi expressed relief that the suspect had been caught but remained uneasy because the community has seen he has a history of escaping justice.

Ndlazi said that they believed the suspect had not acted alone in his crimes and hoped that he would be brought back to South Africa to face justice and reveal his accomplices.

Ward councillor Sthembiso Mncwango said they had been informed through a series of recorded messages between police from KZN and Eswatini about the arrest of the man suspected of killing Ngwane.

In the recorded messages that Scrolla.Africa has listened to, Eswatini police confirm the arrest and also mentioned that the man had served time for a rape that happened there.
