A 48-year-old man is believed to have attacked and killed his mother, 78, and sister-in-law, 60, with a sharp object on Monday in the Ga-Chuene Moshate Village, Polokwane, Limpopo
He also hurt a neighbour and his 23-year-old niece, who managed to escape and get help.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said they arrested the suspect with help from the community.
“The injured 23-year-old woman was rushed to hospital where she is receiving medical attention.
“The motive for the killings is still unknown. The suspect will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon facing two counts of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” he said.
Provincial SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe shared her sadness over the attacks on the women by a family member.
“We will ensure that justice prevails for the victims,” she said.
Community leader Matsobane Ngwepe wants the court to deny the suspect bail.
“He is a danger to his family and community and deserves to be locked away and punished,” he said.
“It is heartbreaking to see women being killed by men who are supposed to protect them.
“We are calling on law enforcement agencies to … ensure that abusers are punished accordingly,” he said.
