A police captain managed to survive a storm of bullets after he found himself under heavy gunfire from cash-in-transit robbers on Thursday morning.
“The police officer, who was on his way to an early operation in Inanda, and wearing his protective gear, tactically returned fire and found his way out of the vehicle and took cover,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
The gun battle occurred on the northbound N2 highway before the KwaMashu off-ramp.
Netshiunda said an unknown number of suspects travelling in a number of vehicles opened fire without notice at the officer’s unmarked bakkie, which was driving behind the cash vehicle.
He said the officer managed to stop other motorists who could have been caught in the crossfire.
“The brazen criminals went on to blow the truck open and got away with an undisclosed amount of money,” said Netshiunda.
“Cash-in-transit security guards were not harmed although they were robbed of their firearms, one of which was a rifle.”
Anyone with information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
