Early information obtained by Scrolla.Africa shows that the domestic dispute started just after midnight on Monday at their home in Illovo south of Durban.
The police officer then shot the wife dead. When their son tried to stop him, the son was shot in the hand, but he survived.
The officer then turned the gun on himself and died at the scene.
It is understood that all this was triggered by divorce papers that were filed by the wife.
It is not yet clear why the wife wanted to end their years-long marriage.
The spokesperson of the metro police force, Boysie Zungu, confirmed the incident and said SAPS had begun their investigation.
“We can confirm the incident,” Zungu said.
The names of the deceased are known but will be withheld until the family has been notified.
