Police Warrant Officer Onkokame Shoboro, 46, and his alleged accomplice Motseothata Ndlovu, 25, have been arrested for possessing suspected stolen cattle.
On Wednesday, the pair appeared in the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court in North West.
North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the accused were arrested after the police received information that they were transporting cattle.
Nine Bonsmara calves worth R80,000 were found loaded in a trailer pulled by a Ford Ranger double cab bakkie.
“The matter was reported to the provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU) who conducted preliminary investigations and finally charged the pair,” Mokgwabone said.
Both suspects were remanded in custody and will reappear in court on 15 May to apply for bail.
Mokgwabone said Shoboro is attached to the Bloemhof Visible Policing Unit.
“The bakkie, which belongs to Shoboro, was confiscated together with the trailer. The lawful owner of the calves has been located,” said Mokgwabone.
Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, the North West SAPS provincial commissioner, said there would be no tolerance for police officers involved in crime.
Kwena applauded Bloemhof police and ACIU members for their collaboration and quick response, which led to the arrest of the two suspects.
“Police management will not hesitate to deal effectively with dishonest officials who tarnish the image of the police service,” Kwena added.
