Soccer coach behind bars for raping kids

A 57-year-old soccer coach and Bible studies teacher has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting young boys he recruited for his soccer team.

These incidents happened over two months earlier this year in Waterloo, Durban. The victims are boys between the ages of 10 and 14.

The Women Pact Foundation says there could be as many as 40 victims.

“When the community found out about these terrible accusations, they were shocked and angry. They took matters into their own hands and severely beat the accused,” the foundation said in a statement.

“The boys … are alleged victims of this unimaginable abuse. Their innocence has been shattered by someone who should have been a protector and guide. This is beyond sad—it’s a tragedy that strikes at the heart of every parent, every community member,” the statement added.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest and said the coach will be in court again soon.

“Police in Verulam have arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with five counts of rape after the suspect allegedly assaulted five boys in Waterloo.

“The case has been handed over to the Phoenix Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences unit for further investigation,” Netshiunda said.
