Police in the Eastern Cape’s Sarah Baartman district arrested nearly 50 people for domestic violence during the second week of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against violence on women and children.
District Police Spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy confirmed that between 2 and 7 December, a total of 84 suspects were taken into custody. Of these, 48 were arrested for assault cases linked to domestic violence.
District Commissioner Major General Zolani Xawuka urged residents to drink responsibly, noting that most assaults happened when suspects were intoxicated.
“We are urging residents to drink responsibly, especially during this time of the year. Most suspects, who were nabbed for assault cases, committed those offences while they were intoxicated. These are crimes that could have been easily avoided if people could learn to contain themselves when under the influence of liquor,” said Xawuka.
