  • Hammanskraal residents now have safe drinking water after the first phase of the new water treatment plant has finished.
  • The project comes after more than 20 residents died in a cholera outbreak linked to dirty water.

Hammanskraal residents can finally drink water from their taps after months of living with unsafe water.

The Tshwane Municipality finished the first phase of the Magalies Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant last month. Officials waited to turn on the taps until tests showed the water was safe to drink.

Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya visited the plant on Wednesday.

“This follows a process of purging the reticulation system which was previously supplied by the Temba Water Works using clean water sourced from the new Klipdrift Packaged Plant.

“The prolonged process was to ensure that the system is fully rehabilitated, disinfected and safe,” she said.

The new plant is a temporary fix while work continues on the troubled Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The Rooiwal project was hit by corruption, leading to a deadly cholera outbreak that killed more than 20 people.

The city plans to finish the second phase by the end of February, with the third and fourth phases done in April.

Moya said she’s waiting for investigators to report on the corrupt Rooiwal tender.

“The unit has confirmed that they completed the first stage of their investigation.

“This has resulted in criminal referrals to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and disciplinary referrals to the City of Tshwane.

“We look forward to receiving the report and acting on the recommendations, as addressing the injustice of the failure to provide for the residents of Hammanskraal must include consequence management,” she said.
