· The Gugulethu Sport Council hosted a Christmas lunch to support elderly residents who are often alone during the festive season.
· Seniors danced to jazz, shared stories and got health advice at the event, which aimed to show love and appreciation for elders.
Elderly residents in Gugulethu were all smiles as they danced, ate and laughed together at a Christmas lunch hosted by the Gugulethu Sport Council.
The event was held at the Gugulethu Sports Complex, where senior citizens were treated to a variety of meals, jazz music and heartfelt appreciation.
Council chairperson Nceba Sandlana said the event was all about giving back to the people who laid the foundation of the community.
“These are our heroes. We don’t want anything from them, just their blessings,” said Sandlana.

He said many elderly residents live alone and don’t always get to feel love or care during the holidays.
“We want them to know they are not alone. We are here, and we care.”
Sandlana called the elderly the “pillars” of Gugulethu.
“Gugulethu is what it is because of your sacrifices, wisdom and love,” he told the crowd.
He urged the younger generation to look after the elderly, especially during the festive season.
“Some of them won’t have a Christmas at all. But they still pray for us as if we are their own children. Let’s show them the love they deserve,” said Sandlana.
Nandi Ntshoza, 75, who chairs the Gugulethu Older Citizen Pension Club, said it was an unforgettable day.
“Some of us have never sat at a decorated table or eaten while music played. It was a new experience,” she said.
Ntshoza said the lunch gave them a chance to connect with others and talk about the struggles older people face.
“We shared our problems and got advice from a health worker who reminded us to move around and not sit for too long.”
She said being seen and cared for made them feel happy.
“We are glad there are still people who care. Most people ignore elders, but today we felt loved.”
