It was all smiles for children from the Thabo Mbeki informal settlement when Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town brought them gifts.
For some, it was the first time they had received Christmas gifts and had a meal with Father Christmas.
Alaric Jacob from the hospital said the facility has an annual drive, with a cook-off competition.
“Staff members cook, we sell the food, and with money we make, we bless a charity. It is a way of giving back to the community,” Jacob said.
On the day staff played with the kids, told them funny stories and had lunch with them before giving them toys.
Jacobs told Scrolla.Africa that the hospital sympathises with kids who are less fortunate; hence they always make sure to go out and make a change.
“Giving joy and love is the most important thing, and seeing children happy is our priority.”
The hospital has been doing the drive for the past five years. Each year they identify a charity organisation to which they donate goods such as groceries, building material or soccer kits.
Buzwe Kali, a community leader and founder of the Mzila Omhle organisation, said he was grateful for the donations they had received from the hospital.
“Most people don’t know that hospitals take care not only of sick people but also of those in need.”
Receiving Christmas gifts made the organisation realise that there are people who care about less fortunate people.
“Seeing the kids smile was priceless; they enjoyed the meal and loved the toys they received.” A community member applauded what the hospital had done for their kids.
“They must not see this as something small, because most kids would not get presents. It is huge to them.”
Some loved seeing Father Christmas playing with them. “I didn’t know that hospitals do anything like this. I thought they would remain in the hospital, and I am impressed by their work.”
