Police in Gqeberha are investigating the murders of six people whose bodies were discovered in a suspected drug den on Saturday morning.
A three-year-old child was the sole survivor of the attack, in which three men and three women, including the child’s mother, were murdered.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said neighbours in New Brighton Township made the gruesome discovery of bodies strewn around inside the house.
“It is alleged that between 1am and 2am neighbours heard gunshots and at about 6:45 am, when they went to check on their neighbour’s house in Ramba Street, they found the door open,” she said.
Upon further investigation neighbours discovered the bodies of three males and one female in the lounge.
Another female body was found in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. The female in the bedroom had a three-year-old with her who was unharmed.
Residents in the neighbourhood of eLalini in New Brighton refused to speak to the media in fear of being targeted by criminals.
However, the neighbours did allege that the house where the murders occurred was a drug base where people came to smoke tik.
One neighbour said they were scared to even be seen with the police because they don’t know who’s watching, as the area is quite dangerous.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso called on the New Brighton community to work closely with police in identifying and arresting those responsible.
Police are urging anyone who can assist to contact detective Colonel Willie Mayi on 082-697-5914 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
