Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs shot dead in hijacking

South African football player Luke Fleurs was shot and killed during a carjacking in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Fleurs, 24, was at a petrol station in Honeydew when he was approached by two armed men.

“While waiting to be served he was confronted by two armed males driving a white BMW 1 series,” said Masondo.

The gunmen forced Fleurs out of his car and shot him in the upper body. They then fled the scene, one driving Fleurs’s vehicle and the other in their BMW.

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing to the public for information.

“Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has appointed a team of seasoned detectives from the provincial office to investigate and search for the suspects,” said Masondo.

The death of Fleurs, a defender for the Kaizer Chiefs, has been met with sadness on social media, with many expressing condolences to his family and the South African football community.
