Kaizer Chiefs are out of the Nedbank Cup after Stellenbosch FC beat them 2-1 at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.
Stellenbosch scored twice in the first 23 minutes. Ibraheem Jabaar scored from a penalty and Devin Titus scored a long-range goal.
Chiefs pulled one back in the second half when Flavio Da Silva scored from the penalty spot. But it was not enough to save them.
Co-head coach Cedric Kaze said his team only had themselves to blame. “From the first minute we were not decisive,” he said. “We didn’t go into the game with the right attitude and mentality and we conceded avoidable goals.”
Kaze said his players wasted too many chances. Forward Mduduzi Shabalala had three one-on-one chances with the Stellenbosch goalkeeper but could not score.
“In the first half we had three one-on-ones with their goalkeeper and didn’t score,” Kaze said. “Today was one of those days where everything you do is not enough.”
Chiefs had been in good form before the match. They won four games in a row in 2026.
The defeat means they are out of the competition they won last year. That trophy ended a 10-year drought for the club.
But Chiefs still have two competitions to fight for. On Sunday they play Al Masry of Egypt at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. A win would boost their chances of reaching the Caf Confederation Cup quarterfinals.
Chiefs are also third in the Betway Premiership. They are two points behind Mamelodi Sundowns and five behind Orlando Pirates.
“Unfortunately we are out of this cup, but we will fight for the rest of the season in the remaining games in the league and the Confederation Cup,” Kaze said.
