Champions stand tall against Newcastle

Manchester City produced a rather straightforward looking 2-0 win over Newcastle United in Saturday’s lunch time Premier League clash at the Etihad.

Phil Foden struck a sublime shot at goal after some individual brilliance to put City ahead after just 15 minutes.

The young star from Stockport became the youngest player to reach 50 Premier League goal involvements for Manchester City, netting his 33rd league goal at the age of 22.

Nick Pope returned from suspension in goal for the Magpies, but the opener deflected off him and Newcastle looked set for another defeat following their Carabao Cup final defeat to City’s rivals United a week ago.

Callum Wilson and Joelinton had good opportunities to draw level, but Ederson would not be beaten, and kept his 100th league clean sheet.

He was the third fastest keeper to reach the milestone, doing so in 208 appearances, only slower than Petr Cech and Pepe Reina.

Bernardo Silva made it two to secure the three points for the Cityzens, with the Portuguese’s effort a landmark goal, too.

His finish was the club’s 1000th home goal in the Premier League and the win now puts them just two points behind Arsenal at the top of the league standings.
