In a repeat of last season’s final, Real Madrid showed their class as they came back from 2-0 down to win 5-2 against Borussia Dortmund on Champions League Tuesday.
Los Blancos went behind to Donyell Malan and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in the first half, but the tide would turn as soon as the Germans opted to switch to a more defensive approach.
Vinicius Jr was destructive as he scored a half an hour hatrick, while Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vasquez also added their names to the scoresheet.
The result was a clutch one for the holders as they bounced back from their defeat to Lille on matchday two.
For Dortmund, this was the first loss of the continental campaign, a result that sees them drop into fifth in the standings of the league phase in the competition.
At the top lie Aston Villa, who picked up their third win in as many games.
Unai Emery’s side beat Bologna 2-0 at Villa Park while fellow English Premier League side Arsenal also picked up three points with a 1-0 win over Shakhtar.
Elsewhere, PSG drew 1-1 with PSV while Juventus were defeated 1-0 at home by Stuttgart. AC Milan and Monaco picked up big home wins over Club Bruges and Crvena Zvezda in the earlier games.
On Wednesday, Barcelona host Bayern Munich in the pick of the fixtures while Liverpool face Leipzig and Manchester City take on Sparta Prague.
