Celebrating a great victory for the South African Sevens Women

Lucky Maree

No matter that the Women’s Sevens team’s fight for victory is against Colombia. No matter that the win means the South Africans are in the hunt for the lowly 13th spot out of 16 teams at the Rugby Sevens World Cup.

To the packed Cape Town Stadium it was a glorious sight to see Nadine Roos scoring four beautiful solo tries giving South Africa a 27 point win over the Colombians.

To those who have watched the South African Women’s team getting pummelled for months by the top female teams in the world. Only yesterday they suffered a 29-0 defeat against a rampant French team.

Watching them for months, getting up from the canvas and getting back into the battle has been both heartbreaking and a joy. Heart breaking because they seemed to be toiling without reward. A joy because such courage is beautiful to watch and observe. Such courage, such determination, such a special moment.

And the almost capacity crowd celebrated the victory with the team, clearly understanding the significance of this win.

After the match, Roos took none of the glory for herself.

“The team was at its best, today,” she said.

Is this an historic turning point for the South African woman? We hope so. There should be no looking back from here.
