A cash-in-transit heist on the N4 in Pretoria resulted in a major traffic pileup on Wednesday afternoon.
The N4 between Simon Vermooten offramp and Rossouw streets was closed for several hours after armed suspects opened fire and caused several vehicles to crash. Multiple motorists were left injured.
Eyewitnesses said some motorists were sent spinning when thugs opened fire on the highway at around 09:30 am.
According to Emer-G-Med, four security officers sustained moderate injuries during the heist.
“Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene near Simon Vermooten Road to find absolute chaos,” notes the emergency services provider in a statement.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a cash delivery truck and its escort vehicle were driving along the N4 route when they were attacked by suspects who were reportedly travelling in multiple vehicles. The escort vehicle and the cash truck collided with the suspects’ vehicles.
“The escort vehicle is reported to have overturned and two security guards were injured in the process. The driver of the cash truck and his crew member also sustained injuries from the impact,” said Netshiunda.
He says the suspects allegedly robbed the security guards of three firearms, a rifle and two pistols before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
Netshiunda says anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of the suspects should contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111.
“Tip-offs can also be provided using the MySAPS App. Information received will be treated with strict confidentiality,” he added.
