Carbon monoxide blamed for death of two City Power workers in Joburg CBD

By Everson Luhanga

Carbon monoxide is suspected in the death of two City Power workers in Johannesburg CBD on Saturday.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded to an incident involving five contract workers from Solid Management who were stuck underground in a manhole while working.

EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba said three individuals have been rescued and transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Two have been confirmed dead, and efforts are underway to safely extricate the remaining individual.

Scrolla.Africa has learnt that the trapped workers are contracted to City Power.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena confirmed: “The trapped workers in the inner city were working on a City Power project in the underground tunnels,” he said.

A source at the scene said the workers might have been exposed to carbon monoxide emissions from the generators they were using while working underground.

Mangena said City Power is investigating the circumstances that led to this incident.
