- The Cinderella hitmaker says he learned from Mampintsha but has his own sound and style as an artist.
- He told Gagasi FM he respects the late gqom star and is not offended by comparisons from fans.
New Afrotainment artist Captain has hit back at claims that he is trying to copy the late gqom icon Mampintsha.
Captain, whose real name is Sphamandla Mathebula, is known for tracks like Cinderella and Senze Njani. He spoke about the rumours during an interview on Gagasi FM’s Urban Top 40 with Heazy Madida.
“I look up to Mampintsha,” he said. “I learned a lot from him and, believe it or not, he learned a lot from me too.”
Captain said that while he understands the comparisons, people need to know he is on his own path.
“I will never act like Mampintsha. I will never be him. He helped teach me, and I needed that to grow as a singer,” he explained.
Since Mampintsha died in December 2022 after suffering a stroke, fans have been quick to defend his legacy. That’s one reason many are sensitive to any artist who sounds or moves like him.
But Captain said he’s not upset by what people say.
“It’s their opinion, and I can’t stop them from having it,” he said.
He made it clear that although he was inspired by Mampintsha, he is focused on building his own identity in the music industry.
