A Cape Town criminal died after he fell from a hiking trail on Table Mountain while escaping with some of the jewellery and cellphones he had stolen from a group of tourists.
The City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said a group of hikers were being led along the Slangolie hiking trail on Sunday when they were confronted by two robbers.
“The tour guide defended the group by spraying both assailants with pepper spray. The muggers ran for their lives with the cellphones they had stolen,” said Smith.
He said the police with members of SANParks attempted to locate the cellphones, using the last location transmitted, and discovered that one of the muggers had fallen to his death.
Namhla Cana, a 45-year-old resident was shocked to hear about the incident and said that security needs to be tightened at all hiking areas in the city.
“The criminals have realised that people go hiking and they are now robbing them. Until the security is tight we will never hear the end of robberies in hiking areas,” said Cana.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said the Camps Bay police have opened an inquest docket to investigate how the robber fell to his death.
