- A 40-year-old woman from Cape Town started washing clothes to raise money for stock after her government grant was stopped.
- She sells apples, bananas, pears and grapes at traffic lights Monday to Friday and washes clothes on weekends for money.
A 40-year-old woman from Cape Town is selling fruit at traffic lights after her monthly grant was stopped.
“I was getting my R370 each month but it stopped and I was using the money to buy food for my two kids,” she said.
She started washing people’s clothes to raise money to buy stock. “People are always busy and they don’t have time to do their washing. The money I got from them helped a lot because I managed to buy the stock,” she said.
She sells apples, bananas, pears and grapes. “I decided to sell fruit on the traffic lights for those who need to snack while on their way home or work,” she said.
She chose traffic lights instead of the mall. “I didn’t want to go to the mall because people there had already had their stands. Going there was going to cause trouble for me,” she said.
She arrives at 07:30. “The business is good, people are supporting me and I am taking care of my kids,” she said.
She still washes clothes on weekends for extra money. The amount she charges depends on the washing.
“I cannot mention what I am making because we live in a sick world where we have people who demand money from those who work hard for their families,” she said.
The challenge is weather. “I will try to get a gazebo to put my stuff in and to get a place to hide when it is too hot,” she said.
“I chose to start this because I don’t want to bother people by asking for food. Hustling is good and a way to go,” she said.
