A 24-year-old man who was found with guns linked to extortion was arrested by Cape Town police on Wednesday morning in the Samora Machel settlement in Philippi.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, spokesperson for the Western Cape SAPS, said the Anti-Economic and Extortion Crime Task Team arrested the suspect for possessing illegal firearms and drugs.

“The members received information about firearms being kept at a property in Samora Machel. The firearms were used in extortion, and after searching the place, they found weapons and drugs,” said Twigg.

The police recovered an AK-47 with 45 rounds of ammunition, five shotgun rounds, a 9mm pistol, 16 mandrax tablets and 36 packets of crystal meth in the house.

The man will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once he has been charged.

A local business owner, who did not want to be named, welcomed the arrest.

“We are living in fear. The extortionists are making life unbearable. I hope those arrested will stay in jail for a long time,” he said.

“If our business didn’t do well, we had to borrow money to pay them.”

To report extortion, call the Western Cape SAPS on 0800 31 4444.
