While cosmetic surgery has sagged badly (in numbers of procedures) in the times of Covid but butt implants have shown a serious bulge (in terms of sales).
And nobody knows why!
Trying to get to the bottom of it, dermatologist Ava Shamban suggested to Bloomberg that longer periods spent sitting on one’s behind, and less time spent working out your glutes, leads to a flatter behind. But she also refers to it as possibly just a perception. She calls it a “modern-day ‘secretary spread’ or a general flattening of the buttocks.”
She also points towards social media as a cause. “Presumably, seeing the higher, tighter rounder assets on social media or any number of reality distractions, patients may be researching and ultimately scheduling procedures to give their bottom line a much-needed boost.”
Implants, by the way, provide volume to the behind and are not to be confused with butt lifts, which turn a saggy bottom into a firm one.
While botox and soft-tissue fillers remain the most popular cosmetic procedures in America, they both saw an overall decrease in numbers, according to data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Butt implants, on the other hand, are up 22%, from 970 to 1,179.
The biggest loser in the cosmetic surgery popularity stakes is hair implants, which are down 60% since 2019.
This too has left experts scratching their heads.
Dr. Gary Linkov, a facial and hair plastic surgeon in New York, attributes this in part to “the decline of ‘turnkey operations” in which a surgeon can offer procedures on-demand alongside a scheduled operation.
