Orlando Pirates 2-0 victory over Cape Town City at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday saw them climb back to fourth place in the DStv Premiership with 28 points.
Despite scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of the game, Pirates wasted a number of other goal-scoring opportunities to win the game by an even bigger margin. Their coach Josef Zinnbauer felt his side should have done better in front of goal.
“It was a good game. But I’m unbelievably disappointed with the way we missed our scoring chances. We were not clinical enough and it’s disappointing,” said Zinnbauer.
The German was under immense pressure going into the match after losing 2-0 to Golden Arrows last Tuesday. Zinnbauer couldn’t hold back his frustration with the way striker Thembinkosi Lorch continued to misfire when in the opponent’s box.
“We were under pressure before this game. And we needed this win. We had a good team talk before the game and we worked hard at the back. But I’m still frustrated with how we continue to miss chances to bury games. Lorch could have scored two goals in the last two minutes of the game.”
The win also helped Pirates keep their league unbeaten record at Orlando Stadium intact. Their last home loss was to Bidvest Wits back in August 2018.
One encouraging factor for Zinnbauer was to see Dion Hotto score the fastest goal of the season so far. The Namibian gave Bucs the lead just 46 seconds into the game and Vincent Pule made it two in the 5th minute.
In the other match played earlier on Tuesday, SuperSport missed out on a glorious chance to cut the deficit between them and leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to two points. United were beaten 2-1 away by Bloemfontein Celtic, and now sit five points behind Downs.
United will feel hard done by referee Philip Tiyane, and with good reason, as Harris Tchilimbou, who assisted Celtic’s game-winner, was offside in the buildup play leading to the goal.
