Brown’s Farm matrics battle without a library

Matriculants in Philippi, Cape Town are battling with two challenges as they prepare for their exams.

Not only are they struggling with load shedding, but they’re also unable to access the Brown’s Farm Library. The library was vandalised and looted during the Santaco taxi strike in August.

The strike disrupted the lives of many residents who lost their businesses, vehicles and even loved ones. It also robbed the students of a critical resource.

For matriculant Xola Jilingisi, the closing of the library has had a disastrous effect on their studies.

“The library was very helpful because we got the information we needed to prepare for our exams. We also met there to discuss schoolwork. We can’t do that anymore,” said Xola.

“Most learners don’t have enough space in their homes to read or accommodate a large group. The library was the perfect place for us.”

Another student, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed the convenience that the library offered.

“I am being raised by a single mother. I didn’t have to ask her for transport money when I went to the library, but that all changed after community members looted and vandalised our library,” she said.

Travelling to other areas to use libraries isn’t a safe option for them. Despite these difficulties, they remain determined to make their families proud.

Councillor Patricia van de Ross, MCM for Community Services and Health, revealed the extent of the damage to the library.

“Earlier in August, looters broke into the library and proceeded to steal computer equipment and appliances. They returned an hour later and broke doors and windows. The library is unfortunately closed until further notice,” said Ross.

There’s no timeline yet for when the damages will be fixed, or when the library will reopen.
