Just one day after leading South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Ivory Coast on 10 February, head coach Hugo Broos said he wanted to resign from his role.
The 71-year-old revealed this in a conversation with Safa president Danny Jordaan.
Broos allegedly asked to quit because of the constant criticism he faced, the challenge of being separated from his family in Belgium, especially his grandchildren, and a lack of support from the PSL regarding the national team’s schedule.
Broos shared his feelings on a podcast on 29 February, explaining the shock his announcement caused to Jordaan and the difficulties he has faced over the last two and a half years, Soccer Laduma reported.
He also mentioned the physical toll the demanding schedule had taken on the players, who, after participating in World Cup qualifiers and various league and continental competitions, reported for national team duty while they were physically exhausted.
Despite his announcement, Broos remains the head coach of Bafana Bafana, and it’s unclear whether the issues he raised, particularly those involving the PSL’s scheduling conflicts, will be addressed.
Safa has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the matter.
