Brentford sting sub-par Liverpool

The bees of Brentford put on a dominant display at the Gtech Community Stadium with a 3-1 victory over the Reds in Monday’s Premier League clash.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lost any look of resurgence they had on Boxing Day when they won 3-1 at Villa Park — and that is without having to face Brentford’s injured main man Ivan Toney.

Missing captain Jordan Henderson due to a concussion and Andy Robertson from the start, Liverpool were off-colour from the onset. Despite having the larger share of the ball, they just were not good enough in the final third.

The returning world cup finalist Ibrahima Konate scored an early own goal before Yoane Wissa made it two before the break.

Brentford’s top scorer Toney was missing due to a leg injury sustained against West Ham but Wissa stepped up and could have had more if not for the offside flag.

Three half time substitutions from Klopp meant that they could turn up the gears, with Oxlade Chamberlain pulling one back on the 50 minute mark.

Darwin Nunez had a goal of his own ruled out for offside, and Bryan Mbeumo made it three for the bees late on to claim a famous three points over the Merseyside club.

The win sends Brentford up into seventh, just two points behind Liverpool, with the Reds hoping to bounce back in their FA Cup tie against Wolves next weekend.
