Abongile Majavu was in an abusive relationship for two years – and on Saturday night it allegedly cost him his life.
Abongile, 28, from Philippi Browns Farm in Cape Town was allegedly stabbed to death by his older lover, a 36-year-old woman.
His aunt, Nomfusi Majavu, told Scrolla.Africa that she received a call to say Abongile had been killed and she rushed to the scene.
“I saw my nephew on the floor. I prayed to God to save his life, but it was too late. The knife was still in his chest,” Majavu said.
The family said they had been advising him to end the relationship with the abusive girlfriend, but he refused. He said he loved her so much that he could not live without her.
One of Abongile’s friends said the age gap was a huge problem.
“The woman always made Abongile realise that he was the youngest in the relationship,” she said.
“She always shouted at him even in front of his friends and it was not the first time she stabbed him.”
The woman allegedly stabbed him around his waist at the beginning of the year.
If it were up to Majavu’s family, they would have ensured that the woman paid for the funeral.
“Now is the time that she can play the role of being the older person in the relationship and bury him as she was the one who took his life,” said a community member supporting the family.
“We need to support the family just like we do when a woman is killed by a man. It is gender-based violence, and it doesn’t matter which gender commits the crime,” said a community member.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, said they are investigating a murder case after a man was stabbed to death.
“A female was arrested and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once she has been charged. The motive for the killing was possibly an argument,” said Twigg.
