Scott Boland tore through South Africa’s top order as the Proteas slumped to 97-5 at stumps on day two of the second test against Australia in Gqeberha on Monday.
Temba Bavuma showed fight with an unbeaten 41 off 108 balls, including a six pulled off Pat Cummins out of the ground.
The South African skipper will resume alongside Wiaan Mulder (two off 15) on Tuesday.
But Australia, who elected to bowl on day one, are firmly on top after another rain-hit day.
Boland leads the attack with 4-31 from 14 overs. After removing Aiden Markram and David Bedingham on day one, he struck early on Monday, having debutant Marques Ackerman caught behind for 6 with one that nipped away.
Matthew Breetzke fell for just four, driving loosely at Mitchell Starc to hand Alex Carey another catch and leave the hosts 40-4.
Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton rebuilt with a 52-run stand. Rickelton was dropped on 26 by Marnus Labuschagne at leg slip off Cummins, but Boland removed him for 31 two overs later, as Matt Renshaw took a brilliant one-handed catch at first slip.
Play started at 15:45 after morning rain and a wet outfield required four pitch inspections. The weather looks a lot more promising for the remainder of the week, with fans hoping to see a some fight from the hosts after defeat in Durban last week.
