- André Esterhuizen says Argentina are tough opponents, warning they have beaten South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in recent seasons.
- The Boks play Argentina in Durban on Saturday, and losing could kill either team’s title dream.
Springbok centre André Esterhuizen says fans should expect a brutal battle when South Africa take on Argentina at Kings Park on Saturday.
Both teams are still in the hunt for the Rugby Championship title, but defeat in Durban could end their hopes.
“It’s always hard playing against them because they are a tough and passionate nation,” said Esterhuizen, Citizen reported.
The big midfielder, who has also filled in as a loose forward this season, warned against underestimating Los Pumas.
“They beat all three opposition teams last year, the Boks, Wallabies and All Blacks, and they’ve beaten New Zealand and Australia again this year,” he said.
Esterhuizen believes the match will be decided by the forwards. “The team that looks after the ball, uses their chances, and wins the aerial contest will probably come out on top.”
The Boks come into the clash after a record win over the All Blacks in Wellington, where Esterhuizen scored the final try off the bench.
But he says there’s still work to do. “In the second half, a lot of things came into our favour because we executed better and worked harder. Now we just need to be consistent.”
On his new hybrid role, he said: “Luckily my size makes it easier. Whether I go on at six or 12, I’m just happy to play.”
