The notorious mastermind of a blue-light gang — known for hijacking and robbing motorists while pretending to be law enforcement officers — has been arrested in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni said the suspect was arrested at his residence in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni, “in the early hours of Monday, 18 March”.

He was caught in possession of police-issued blue lights, traffic police uniforms and insignia, a high-calibre firearm and ammunition, counterfeit government vehicle registration plates and a suspected hijacked vehicle.

This arrest followed a tip-off from National Crime Intelligence.

A joint operation with members from various units including the Gauteng traffic police saturation unit, Tracker Connect, Fidelity Specialised Services, and the Cap Security Specialised Unit was deployed to apprehend the suspect.

They discovered a VW Polo at the suspect’s premises, which had reportedly been hijacked in Phokeng, North West, in February.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and a hijacked motor vehicle.

Mthombeni said the arrest could help in solving many cases where motorists were robbed by criminals using blue lights and impersonating police officers.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo earlier said eight members of the gang had been arrested in the past six months.
