Bloodbath as patient fires wildly in hospital

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after two patients and a cop were shot at New Somerset Hospital near the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Saturday night.

In a statement, the police said Sea Point police had taken a 35-year-old inmate to the hospital for medical attention when the incident happened.

According to the police, the suspect who was a patient at the hospital grabbed a police officer’s gun and fired several shots.

Two patients who were near the suspect died from gunshot wounds on the scene and the 32-year-old police official who was shot in the head was seriously injured.

The suspect was disarmed and arrested by other police officers. 

The police officer died from the gunshot wounds on Sunday morning.

Western Cape premier, Alan Winde who visited the hospital following the incident said he was shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of the two patients.
