Benni the reason for Højlund’s fine form

Rasmus Højlund has credited Manchester United’s forward coach Benni McCarthy for helping him find form in front of goal.

The striker had a slow start in Manchester, with his opening Premier League goal only coming on Boxing Day following his move from Atalanta in August.

After scoring six goals in his last five league games, the Dane has finally found his feet – and former Bafana Bafana man McCarthy has been credited for that.

“You could say that we have found each other better. We have had some forward meetings with Benni McCarthy, where we talked about things,” Højlund told Danish outlet BT.

“It wasn’t just me and two others – it was everyone from the front line who attended the meeting. And we talked about playing each other in well and helping each other because that’s the way we will get the best results.

“I try to train well and prepare every single day. And I train on both my strengths and weaknesses. I have got better and better. I’ve had a good month [or so] but it has been the result of good work over a long period. It clicks a little better than at the start of the Premier League season.”

Højlund’s teammate and England international Marcus Rashford has also previously touched on McCarthy’s influence, saying at the time that it was good for United to “have attack-minded coaches”.

United face a trip to Brentford on Saturday following the conclusion of the international break before Chelsea and Liverpool await the Red Devils next week.
