Beauty boss helps young people build nail businesses

  • Daisy Mbale started her own beauty salon in a garage and today she runs nail classes for people in Tsakani.
  • Her training has already helped students open more than 20 new businesses to improve their lives and make extra money.

A 21-year-old student from Langaville Extension 8 is changing lives in her community by teaching people how to do nails.

Daisy Mbale started her beauty salon in her mother’s garage. She began by braiding hair to pay for her accounting studies at Unisa. As she gained more customers, she decided to learn more skills.

“I added nail technology to my existing skills in braiding and lashes to grow my business and make extra money,” she said.

Mbale bought basic supplies and used TikTok videos to teach herself. She later joined a beauty course while still studying at Unisa. She practised every day on a silicone hand until she felt ready.

Now, she is using her knowledge to run nail classes in Tsakani. She wants to help people who love the beauty industry learn the trade.

She started the classes because there are no beauty schools in the township and courses in other areas cost too much. Her students learn the theory and do practical work. This includes nail preparation, product knowledge, acrylic application and nail art. They get a certificate at the end of the course.

More than 20 new businesses have started after students finished her training. One of her students even opened a beauty school to teach braiding.

“The impact has been incredible, and it is inspiring to see lives changing,” she said.

Mbale hopes to open several salons in Tsakani. She wants to show young people how to stand on their own feet. She said learning to do nails is simple, but people must be patient and keep working hard.

“Having a skill is power because you can create something for yourself and improve your financial situation,” she said.
