South Africa will not win the one day series as they did the tests. Instead, the West Indies fought back incredibly with the white ball after putting a mammoth total on the East London scoreboard.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, with wicketkeeper/captain Shai Hope the shining star with an unbeaten 128 off 115 deliveries.
Rovman Powell (46), Nicholas Pooran (39) and Kyle Mayers (36) made good cameos alongside their skipper to get the Windies to a total of 335/8 in their 50 overs.
In reply, the Proteas were a one man show.
Captain Temba Bavuma joined Quinton de Kock (48) at the top of the order to produce a stunning knock of 144 off 118 balls.
With the first ODI being abandoned due to rain, Bavuma knew that his side could take the lead in the three match series but unfortunately his fellow batters just could not get going.
Akeal Hoosain and Alzarri Joseph each picked up three wickets for the visitors, with Bavuma’s crucial dismissal coming in the 42nd over.
287 was all South Africa could muster, falling short by 48 runs in the end.
The visitors will hope to avoid defeat in Potchefstroom on Tuesday and win the series before the T20s get underway in Gauteng on Saturday.
