Gqom sensation Babes Wodumo has dusted herself off after the death of her husband Mampintsha and is back in the studio, cooking up a new album.
“I’ve got bills to pay, hon. With my husband gone I have to take care of our son Sponge,” she said when quizzed about news that she’s already back at work.
She’s working alongside producer and musician Nkazimulo ‘TNS’ Ngema but said a release date is yet to be confirmed.
The Gqom Queen has achieved significant milestones in her career, working closely with her late husband, Mampintsha, of Big Nuz fame.
She got her breakthrough in 2016 after being signed by Mampintsha’s West Ink Records, when she released her debut album, Gqom Queen.
Mampintsha passed away last month after suffering a stroke. During the memorial service, Babes asked DJ Tira and Big Nuz member Danger to stay by her side.
“Thank you, Tira for loving my husband and Danger, thank you. Tira, please do not abandon me – and you, Danger.”
DJ Tira was supportive of her friend’s focus on her career.
“Babes must go back to the top of the charts,” she told Scrolla.Africa.
“When she joined the music industry she was charging R100,000 per gig. You should not be comfortable with earning less and you need to get out of your comfort zone if you want to go back to the top.
“You need to work hard and have focus. Also, we still have Sponge to raise because Mampintsha is no longer.”
