The 18-year-old singer Ayra Starr’s self-titled debut album knocked afrobeat giant Wizkid off Apple Music’s top spot, just a day after its release on Thursday.
On the same day, prominent Nigerian record producer Don Jazzy, 38, announced her as Mavin Records new signee.
The following day, he tweeted: “She was activated last night and in less than 24 hrs @ayrastarr has the number 1 album in the country on Apple Music. Thanks 🙏🏾 #Mavin”.
The young afropop musician is based in Lagos, but she hails from Nigeria’s Edo State.
Her rise to the top of the country’s pop scene has been as meteoric as her album’s success. It was only two years ago that she first posted videos which showcased her vocal ability on Instagram.
She was reportedly discovered by Jazzy himself, who immediately recognised the potential of her performative talents.
Starr’s five-track EP has taken the crown from Wizkid’s Made in Lagos, which until now has stood firm at the top of Apple Music’s charts since its release in October last year.
The record was released with an accompanying music video to its featured track, Away, which presents Starr as a leather-clad samurai, brimming with style.
One commenter wrote assuredly, “I’ll be here when she blows up. She got everything she needs”.
One look at the charts shows she already has.
